Hervé Bouhnik

Few artists manage to explore such different worlds without ever losing their pictorial identity. From an abstraction to a landscape, from a seascape to a city scene, Hervé Bouhnik has spent nearly forty years developing a language in which color, light and gesture compose an immediately recognizable hand.

His painting does not set out to reproduce the real. It invites you to feel it differently. Behind each work lies a delicate balance between construction and spontaneity, between control and freedom. The paint organizes itself, the colors converse, forms appear and then fade, leaving the eye time to discover what does not give itself away at first glance.

Though the themes change from one series to the next, a single search runs through the whole body of work: turning reality into felt experience. Landscapes become spaces of resonance, seascapes become plays of light, city scenes become colored architectures. For Hervé Bouhnik the subject is never an end in itself; it becomes the starting point of an exploration in which color structures space, light shapes the paint, and gesture gradually reveals the invisible.

Hervé Bouhnik’s path as an artist began in 1985 in New York, where he discovered drawing at the Parsons School of Design. He then built his pictorial language in Israel — at the Avni Institute, at Studio Ra’ananna and at the workshops of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art — before continuing his research today in Paris, at the Lezard’tists studio.

Each painting is conceived as a work that stands on its own. But it is by going through the gallery as a whole that the coherence of his world appears: painting that is free, demanding and deeply personal, where each series lights up the others and takes part in one and the same artistic adventure.
